Atlantis Marine World Pardons Lobster for Thanksgiving

Thursday November 26, 2009
Happy Thanksgiving to all! In 1989, former president George H.W. Bush started a tradition by pardoning a turkey instead of serving it on Thanksgiving. Now Atlantis Marine World in Riverhead, NY is joining in with its own -- decidedly different -- type of pardon: the Long Island aquarium is saving the life of a lobster.

When patrons of Northport's Feed and Grain restaurant called Atlantis Marine World about a rare crustacean, the aquarium "pardoned" the three-foot-long, 24-pound+ male lobster and it has settled into its new home in a tank at the aquarium's research center, the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation.

Atlantis Marine World curator Joseph Yaiullo commented that this will present a unique opportunity for guests to see a lobster this size: "Not only ...[are]... they are rarely on display, but they are often, unfortunately, overfished."

The hefty lobster will be on display at the aquarium daily, including Thanksgiving Day, from 10:00am to 5:00pm. Visitors are encouraged to stop by before or after their Thanksgiving dinner.

Waiting for Justin Bieber, Teens Swarm Roosevelt Field Mall

Tuesday November 24, 2009
Unless you're under 21 or the parent of a teenager, you might not know who Justin Bieber is.... or even how to pronounce his name. (It sounds like "beeber.") But anyone shopping at the Roosevelt Field Mall last week will certainly never forget his name.

A tween clothing store at the mall, Justine, announced that the teenage heart-throb from Canada would be appearing there. About three thousand teenage girls showed up, with or without their parents. Some lovestruck girls even chanted, "We want Justin!" But they never got to see the 15-year-old Canadian singing sensation because the event was cancelled.

Nassau County police were called in to help disperse the crowd and several people sustained minor injuries. The pop star sent out several "tweets" to his fans on twitter, asking them to leave the mall. This included the messages: "They are not allowing me to come into the mall. If you don't leave I and my fans will be arrested as the police just told us." and "The event at Roosevelt mall is cancelled. Please go home. The police have already arrested one person from my camp. I don't want anyone hurt."

To see a YouTube video of the chaos, go to Justin Bieber and the Roosevelt Field Mall.
