Student Poetry Contest

Tuesday February 17, 2009
Do you know a student in grades 3-12 who enjoys writing poetry? The Walt Whitman Birthplace Association presents its 23rd Annual Poetry Contest. The deadline for submissions is March 9, 2009. For contest rules and information, go to the Walt Whitman Birthplace website.

Walt Whitman, the famous American poet, was born in 1819 in the community of West Hills in the town of Huntington, in his family’s small farmhouse. Today, the property, the Walt Whitman Birthplace, is listed as a New York State Historic Site, and is also on the National Register of Historic Places. It is located at 246 Old Walt Whitman Road in Huntington Station.
