Dr. Beach Names Two LI Beaches in His Top 10 for 2009
Saturday May 23, 2009
Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, a.k.a. "Dr. Beach" just released his annual Top 10 Beaches report, and it's no surprise that there are two Long Island beaches on the list. The coastal scientist has over 30 years' experience studying beaches.
OK, so his top pick this year was in Hawaii....but number 3 is Coopers Beach in Southampton and number 6 on the list is Main Beach in East Hampton.

He should have picked Long Beach! BTW, to everyone who’s not from Long Island: there IS a Long Beach, New York — on the south shore of Long Island. I’ve been to famous beaches all over the world - Hawaii, the Caribbean, Phuket, Mombasa, Bali… and the soft, wide, white, sandy beach at Long Beach is still the most beautiful.
Nancy, I couldn’t agree more. I’ve told people from California and from Hawaii that we’ve got the most beautiful beach in the world: Long Beach. One Californian was surprised (!) that we have beaches in New York! And others are surprised to hear that there are surfing beaches on Long Island.
Anyone else out there have a favorite Long Island beach? Is it Long Beach or another sandy shore?
