Cameras to Help Catch Drivers Breaking the Law on Long Island
In a rush to drive to your destination? You might think twice about running a red light. In addition to the real possibility of an accident, you also run the risk of a fine. The New York State Legislature recently gave their approval for Nassau and Suffolk officials to install cameras that would automatically photograph the license plates of cars that go through red lights.
New York City has used cameras like these for 15 years, and many hasty drivers have been caught in the act. The subsequent fines have generated millions for the city.
Nassau and Suffolk counties will be installing 50 cameras each in strategic spots around the Island. They are expected to be fully installed by the end of this year. The resulting fines are estimated to bring in millions in revenue to both counties. Don't be one of their biggest "contributors." Drive safely and stop at red lights.
