At a recent press conference, Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy, District Attorney Thomas Spota and Suffolk Police Commissioner Richard Dormer announced the formation of a special law enforcement unit and a comprehensive program to quell gang violence in the county.
Approximately 20 officers from Suffolk’s police precincts will come together as a single unit to share intelligence focus on areas where gang violence is prevalent. The initiative will also include community outreach and school education components, according to the officials.
The program will feature a comprehensive approach that fosters interaction among the police department, the Suffolk Youth Bureau, community agencies, area schools and other organizations. Goals include providing programs and services, as well as education, to lead youngsters away from gang participation.
