Beware of Phone Scam in Suffolk

By , About.com Guide   October 5, 2009

Follow me on:

The Suffolk County Police Identity Theft Unit is warning people about a scam that tricks victims into revealing their personal identification numbers and debit card information.

Some Suffolk County residents have reported receiving phone calls or text messages falsely informing them that their union debit card number has been closed and needs to be reactivated. They are instructed to call (845) 765-9464 to supposedly reinstate their account, and they are asked for their debit card number and PIN.

The police want to remind people that financial institutions do NOT contact you for personal information by phone, email or regular mail. Always check with your financial institution if you are asked to give out any information.
