A few weeks ago, we heard that the $162 million Mega Millions multi-state lottery drawing had a first place winner ---someone who matched all six numbers in the drawing. The winner was someone who bought a ticket at Cards & Things in Rocky Point in Suffolk County, NY, but hadn't stepped forward right away. This week, lottery officials said that the winning couple has come forward to claim the prize. They haven't been publicly identified yet, but there will be a press conference later this week with the lucky Long Islanders.
UPDATE: Mega millions officials have announced that Richard and Mary Morrison of Suffolk County are Long Island's largest jackpot winners of all time. Mrs. Morrison was buying Christmas angels as gifts at Cards & Things on Route 25A in Rocky Point when she decided to buy some lottery tickets there. She spent only $5 on the tickets, but one of her tickets won the $165 million prize.
Mr. and Mrs. Morrison opted to take a lump sum and each receives a check for around $51 million before taxes and other withholdings or $33,730,496 after taxes.
Before you head out out to Cards & Things in the hopes of buying the next winning lottery ticket, remember that the odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are approximately one in 176 million.
