LI Pine Barrens Society Planning Protest of Gov. Paterson's Budget Cuts Affecting Long Island

Follow me on:

I received an email from the Long Island Pine Barrens Society and thought I would pass it along to my readers. It says:

"Governor Paterson has made some drastic cuts to the state budget, including $79 million from the Environmental Protection Fund which provides for staff and maintenance of all the New York State Parks here on Long Island.

What's more, in addition to the EPF cuts, there will be $0 allocated for additional open space and parks acquisitions here on Long Island. This Saturday, we'll have a unique opportunity to demand that the Governor restore funding to our open space and parks.

Governor Paterson is scheduled to kick-off his campaign for election at Hofstra University's Student Center on Saturday, February 20th at 9:30 a.m.

We need you to be there and show your support for Long Island's State Parks. Our open space and parks are worth the investment of an hour on a Saturday morning.

If these drastic budget cuts move forward, our favorite parks, such as Brentwood, Brookhaven, Caleb Smith, Cold Spring Harbor, Hecksher, Hempstead Lake, Nissequogue River, Orient Beach and Valley Stream could all be closed for good by this summer. To add insult to injury, pools at Hecksher and Jones Beach would be closed, and there would be no July 4th Fireworks over Jones Beach! In this difficult economy, the parks are one of the few affordable places that everyone can enjoy.

HERE'S WHAT YOU CAN DO: Join the Long Island Pine Barrens Society, The Park Advocate and other concerned citizens to demonstrate at Hofstra University during Governor Paterson's campaign kick-off. We will demonstrate outside the building where Paterson will hold his event.

Time: This Saturday, February 20th at 9:30 am. Try to arrive at least 15 minutes early if possible.
Address: Hofstra University David & Sondra Mack Student Center. Near intersection of Hempstead Turnpike and California Avenue Gate on campus. There is parking behind this building, and Field 7 to the West, or additional parking lots are across Hempstead Turnpike. We will be there by 9 a.m., and will gather in front of the Student Center.

Make and Bring Signs Saying "Restore our Open Space and Parks!" "Hey Guv, Give us Back our State Parks!" and so on.

If you can't make it this Saturday, please show your support by signing-on to The Park Advocate's online petition- it only takes 30 seconds! "
