What's in Plum Island's Future?

By , About.com GuideMay 24, 2010

Follow me on:

What goes on at Plum Island, the land that lies about a mile-and-a-half east of Long Island's North Fork? The public might soon know as the federal government is moving its animal research laboratory on Plum Island to Kansas.

Long viewed as the site of possible mysterious goings-on, Plum Island has spawned unproven theories of the animal center being responsible for the so-called Montauk Monster and early this year, a body washed onto Plum Island's beach. And of course, there's the fictitious detective story, Plum Island written by Nelson DeMille.

Now that the government no longer needs the island for its animal disease facility, the big mystery is what the island will be used for. Will the public one day be basking in the sun at the beach that fictional villain Hannibal Lecter called "charming," or will condos one day fill the island?

What do you think should be done with Plum Island? Please leave a comment below.
