Long viewed as the site of possible mysterious goings-on, Plum Island has spawned unproven theories of the animal center being responsible for the so-called Montauk Monster and early this year, a body washed onto Plum Island's beach. And of course, there's the fictitious detective story, Plum Island written by Nelson DeMille.
Now that the government no longer needs the island for its animal disease facility, the big mystery is what the island will be used for. Will the public one day be basking in the sun at the beach that fictional villain Hannibal Lecter called "charming," or will condos one day fill the island?
