The Nassau County Department of Public Works, after consulting with the Nassau County Department of Health, will continue to spray in various communities to help control the mosquito population which may possibly be carrying the West Nile virus.

On Tuesday, August 10, 2010, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m., sections of Plandome, Plandome Manor, Plandome Heights, Manhasset, Munsey Park, Flower Hill, Port Washington and Sands Point will be sprayed.

Alternate dates: Wednesday, Thursday, or Monday, August 11th, 12th or 16th, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The pesticide that will be sprayed is Scourge, which contains resmethrin, a synthetic insecticide, and piperonyl butoxide, which does not directly kill insects, but increases resmethrin's ability to kill them. These active ingredients are dissolved in a petroleum solvent.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) advises that individuals, especially pregnant women and children, should remain inside during the spraying and for about 30 minutes afterwards.

In addition, you are advised to:

  • Close all windows and doors and set your air conditioners on recirculate if possible.
  • Take all children's toys indoors.
  • Keep your pets, their food, water dishes and toys indoors, as well as their food, water dishes and toys.
  • Cover outdoor fish ponds while spraying is going on.
For more information, please call the West Nile Virus Spray Hotline at (888) 844-8657, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. on days that spraying is scheduled, or go to the the Nassau County Department of Health website or the Nassau County website
