Caleb Smith State Park Preserve in Smithtown, NY offers over 500 acres of pristine freshwater wetlands, ponds, fields, streams and upland woods, where 20 species of animals and 145 types of birds find shelter. Even in the winter, there's something for the whole family, indoors as well as outside.
There's a FREE nature museum inside the preserve's main building. And the preserve offers Environmental Education Programs throughout the year. The cost is $3 per program for children and $4 per adult.
This month, the Tiny Tots Let's Discover Nature Hour is suitable for ages 3 to 5 years, and is held on Thursdays from 10 to 11 a.m. On Thursday, January 19, 2012, the program's theme is "Who's Been Walking in the Snow?"
Fun For Kids - for children ages 5 and up will feature "Take A Bird To Lunch" on Saturday, January 21, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. After a short birdwatching walk, kids will construct their own bird feeder. (Please bring one empty, clean half-gallon milk or juice container per child.)
