UPDATE: This is the last weekend of performances. Don't miss this opportunity to hear great local talent singing Verdi's masterpiece. Opera fans on the Island won't have to travel all the way into the city to enjoy Giuseppe Verdi's Rigoletto in March. Footlight Players, a local opera company, will present the opera on three weekends: Friday, March 2, Saturday, March 3, Friday, March 9, Saturday, March 10 and Friday, March 16 and Saturday, March 17, 2012.

All shows start at 7:30 p.m. The performances will be held at the Church of the Ascension, 71 North Village Avenue, Rockville Centre, NY.

Rigoletto is one of Verdi's most famous operas and tells the tragic story of a court jester, and the evil duke who has his eye on Rigoletto's innocent daughter, Gilda. Filled with drama and passion, the opera centers around "la maledizione," a curse put on Rigoletto, and its insidious enfolding in his life.

The live opera is directed by Nathaniel Green (who also sings the title role), with musical direction by Tamara Cashour. The role of Gilda is sung by Gina Haver, and the Duke of Mantua is sung by Salvatore Cappellino. Other local singers in the production include Georgios Argeratos, Bernie Genzer, Lydia Paulsen and Linda Byrne.

Tickets are $15 per person at the door, $12 in advance. All proceeds benefit the church. Please call (516) 766-0693 for more information.
