As of yesterday, Friday, November 2, 2012, The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) is providing hourly service to and from Penn Station on the railroad's four largest branches: Ronkonkoma, Babylon, Port Washington and Huntington. There are also hourly shuttles between Jamaica and the Atlantic Terminal.
Hurricane recovery work --including the clearing of fallen trees and downed lines-- continues with a focus on bringing back service to the smaller branches of the LIRR.
Two of the four East River tunnels that are maintained and operated by Amtrak are not in service at present. As a result, the Long Island Rail Road is only using two of four tunnels which it shares with Amtrak and New Jersey Transit. Amtrak continues their recovery work in the tunnels.
Off-peak fare are in effect throughout the weekend and the onboard penalty fare is going to be waived.
