Huge Fire in Port Washington, NY

By March 14, 2013

Follow me on:

Update: Nassau County's Arson-Bomb Squad detectives investigating the fire say that it was caused by a propane torch used by roofing contractors who were working on a building on Main Street. There are reports that a tremendous fire broke out on Main Street in Port Washington in the afternoon today, Thursday, March 14, 2013. Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries. So far, no one knows how the fire started. Note: downtown Main Street has been closed to traffic until further notice.

The first apparently started in a three-story brick building near the LIRR Port Washington train station, and spread to other buildings. There is thick smoke and flames were seen shooting through the roof of the building.

The Red Cross has set up a reception center at the Port Washington LIRR train station where responders will help families that have been affected by the blaze.

Are any of my readers near the scene? If so, please tell us what you see there.

Just walked by there for the morning commute. Substantial debris still around and the majority of business’ are closed right next to the fire. Smell of smoke still prevalent.

Many thanks for the info, Tom. So sorry to hear that many businesses are closed as a result of the fire. But thank goodness no one was injured.
