Toll Discounts for Drivers of Hybrid Vehicles

Friday June 13, 2008
The McKays are a two hybrid vehicle family, a fact that we're appreciating more and more everyday. Everyone knows hybrid owners save money on gas, although some argue that when you factor in the cost of the vehicle versus the cost of another comparable car, hybrids cost more money in the long run. With the rising fuel costs, I don't even know if that holds true and besides, I love the fact that I'm giving less money to the oil companies as well as doing something good for the environment. Now, I've learned of another cost-benefit of owning a hybrid vehicle — toll discounts for E-ZPass holders.

Those driving the Honda Insight (2000 to 2004 models), Honda Civic (2003 to 2008 models) or Toyota Prius (2001 to 2008 models) can take advantage of the Green Pass Discount Plan from the NY and NJ Port Authority when using Port Authority crossings that accept the E-ZPass. These crossings include the George Washington, Bayonne and Goethals Bridges, the Outerbridge Crossing, and the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels. The Green Pass Discount Plan offers holders a special $4.00 toll rate during off-peak hours. If you're an E-ZPass holder and want to request a Green Pass, send a letter and a copy of your vehicle registration to the E-ZPass New York Customer Service Center, P.O. Box 149004, Staten Island, New York 10314-9004. You can also visit a walk-in center to supply the needed information, but tags will not be issued on the spot since verification of vehicle eligibility is required.

The New York State Thruway Authority has offered a 10% discount to E-ZPass holders since 2006. This plan applies to the same vehicles as the PA Green Pass Discount Plan does.
