How to Register Your Vehicle: New Residents
From your Long Island, NY Guide

If you are a new resident of NYS, you have 30 days to register your vehicle. All forms referenced may be downloaded from the DMV Web site (links below) or may be picked up at a DMV office.


Here's How:
  1. Gather the following documents: proofs of vehicle ownership and your identity (see DMV Web site, link below, for acceptable proofs), and an original New York State Insurance Identification Card.
  2. Also find odometer and damage disclosure statements, and the out-of-state dealer bill of sale showing the purchase price and the amount of out-of-state sales tax paid to the dealer.
  3. Obtain Forms MV-82 (Vehicle Registration/Title Application) and DTF-804 (Claim for Credit of Sales Tax Paid to Another State).
  4. Bring completed forms and all documents to a DMV office. Also bring a check, cash, credit card or money order to pay registration fees and sales tax as determined by the DMV clerk.
  5. Leave DMV office with two license plates, a registration sticker, and a registration document.
