Pet Adoption

Part 1: Give a Cat or Dog a Home

By Dawn Rosenberg McKay, About.com

According to the Humane Society of the United States, the overpopulation situation for both cats and dogs is severe. The source of this overpopulation? Animals that aren't neutered or spayed. The result? Thousands of animals awaiting adoption. In many municipal shelters, animals that cannot be adopted are euthanized.

Pets, in general, are great company. Dogs require a bit of work, but cats are somewhat less demanding. Give them food and water, a clean litter box, and affection, and they're satisfied. In return, you'll get a loyal companion.

Here are some private and municipal animal shelters. Since several public shelters don't adopt out cats, you should call first if you are looking for a feline companion.
