Buying a House on Long Island

Part 3: Finding Your Home

By Dawn Rosenberg McKay, About.com

Many people choose to work with a real estate agent who has been recommended to them. Even though real estate agents have access to most available properties through a multiple listing service, you may be more comfortable dealing with a local agent who is more familiar with the community. In addition, a local agent may have exclusive rights to sell a particular home.

You can search for a local real estate agent on MLSLIrealtor.com, the Web site of the Multiple Listing Service of Long Island. I have gathered a list of some local realtors that have an online presence:

Anastasio Realtors, Huntington
Best Buyer's Broker Realty Inc.
Hamptons Realty Group
Foxtons
RE/MAX of New York, Inc.

Before you make an offer, you should find out how the price of the home in which you're interested compares to homes that have sold recently in the same area. You can search for this Comparable Home Sales Information in Yahoo's Real Estate section.
