What to Do During Spring Recess (2008)

Local museums want to keep you busy during Spring Recess on Long Island. Here are programs and activities taking place on Long Island during Spring Recess. Dates and times are subject to change, so please call the museum to confirm details. Some programs require advance registration.

  • Monday, April 21: About Blue (Blue Man Group- Making Waves Series) at the Long Island Children's Museum
    1 p.m.
    Children (age 5 and up) explore the color "blue," through art and literature. The fee for this program is $3 with admission ($2 for LICM members).

    • Monday, April 21: Darlene Graham presents Stomp-it at the Long Island Children's Museum
      1 and 3 p.m.
      Families with children age 3 and up can dance and sing along with Darlene Graham as she performs old favorites as well as some original songs. The fee for this program is $3 with admission, $6 for Theatre only and $2 for LICM members.

    • Monday, April 21 through Wednesday, April 23: Vacation Ventures - Mixed Media at the Long Island Museum of American Art, History and Carriages
      10 a.m. to noon
      Kids in grades 1 to 3 will use different media to explore styles of American artists. Pre-registration required. The fee for this program is $20/person, $18/ member per day.

    • Monday, April 21; Tuesday, April 22; Thursday, April 24; and Friday, April 25: Astronomy Week at the Cradle of Aviation Museum
      1 to 4 pm
      Week-long activity (*note: does not include Wednesday - see Astronomy and Space Day below*) that focuses on the stars and planets. Explore the night sky in the Cradle's Star Lab. For more information on pricing and other program details contact the museum at (516) 572-4111.

    • Tuesday, April 22: Mother Earth Parade at the Long Island Children's Museum
      1 and 3 p.m.
      Explore female species of plants, insects and animals with Jenny Ulsheimer, a creative naturalist. Children ages 3 and up can create costumes using natural materials and wear them in an Earth Day parade that snakes in and out of the museum. The fee for this program is $3 with admission ($2 for LICM members).

    • Tuesday, April 22 and Wednesday, April 23: Tom Callinan presents Rhythms of the Earth at Long Island Children's Museum
      1 and 3 p.m.
      Singer and songwriter Tom Callinan helps families with children 3 and up explore the rhythms of earth and our own community in a fun-filled performance for the whole family. The fee for this program is $3 with admission, $6 for Theatre only and $2 for LICM members.

    • Wednesday, April 23: Astronomy and Space Day at the Cradle of Aviation Museum
      Noon to 4 p.m.
      Free hands-on activities for children age 7 and up.

    • Thursday, April 24: Up in the Air at the Long Island Children's Museum
      1 and 3 p.m.
      Children age 5 and up can explore the ins and outs of air with hands-on activities and experiments. The fee for this program is $3 with admission ($2 for LICM members).

    • Thursday, April 24: Chamber Player’s International Middle East Rhythms & Music at the Long Island Children's Museum
      1 and 3 p.m.
      Traveling with guide David Winker, of Chamber Player’s International, to the Middle East. Children ages 5 and up can explore Persian, Hebrew and Arab music. The fee for this program is $3 with admission, $6 for Theatre only and $2 for LICM members.

    • Friday. April 25: Liz Joyce Puppets presents The Princess, the Frog and the Pea at the Long Island Children's Museum
      1 and 3 p.m.
      Children age 3 and up can join Liz Joyce, from The Goat on a Boat Puppet Theater in Sag Harbor, as she shares a new show that combines three well-loved stories: the Princess, the Frog and the Pea! This show stars a princess, an un-enchanted frog and a neurotic pea who longs to be a hero. The fee for this program is $3 with admission, $6 for Theatre only and $2 for LICM members.

    • Friday. April 25: Georgia on My Mind at the Long Island Children's Museum
      1 and 3 p.m.
      This program, for children age 7 and up, explores the beauty of living forms that inspired artist Georgia O’Keefe. It including flowers and the real animal skulls of a buck deer and a coyote. Participants will then have the opportunity to create their own O’Keefe-inspired painting with pastels and watercolors. The fee for this program is $3 with admission ($2 for LICM members).

    Pop and Op Exhibit and Games, Gizmos and Toys in the Attic Exhibit at the Nassau County Museum of Art
    These exhibits opened in February, but if you missed them, Spring Recess is a good time to visit, since they will both close shortly. This is the last week to see Games, Gizmos and Toys in the Attic, which features the work of I Spy author Walter Wick. It closes on April 27. The Pop and Op exhibit closes a week later, on May 4.
