Earth Day began on April 22, 1970 and a year later, the United Nations proclaimed it an international holiday. Since then, people around the world have celebrated this holiday annually to continue to think about ways to preserve our planet. Here's a sampling of Earth Day celebrations on Long Island. Friday, April 17
- What: Earthstock. Stony Brook University presents an Earth Day celebration that's open to the public. Environmental organizations and others with an earth-friendly message will be on hand. There will be an Earthstock music performance at 11:30 a.m.
When: Starts at 10 a.m.

- What: Women in Science & Math Series: Mother Earth Day Parade. Children ages 3 and up will enjoy the Long Island Children's Museum's second annual Mother Earth Day Parade. Children will explore plants, insects and animals.

- What: Earth Day at the Quogue Wildlife Refuge. There will be guided nature walks, live animal presentations, crafts for the kids, environmental exhibitors, and self-guided kayaking and canoeing on Old Ice Pond.

Sunday, April 19
- What: Families will enjoy Celebrate Earth Day at the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary & Audubon Center. There will be live aimals demos throughout the day, animal crafts and trails to wander through. Stay for an hour or for the whole day.
When: 1 to 3 p.m. At 1 p.m., the staff will showcase hawks, owls and falcons, and at 2 p.m., you'll see snakes, turtles and lizards.

Wednesday, April 22
- What: First Annual Earth Day Celebration with the Group for the East End. Children, accompanied by an adult, will learn how to prepare healthy treats created from organic, local ingredients. Three different dishes will be prepared and participants will sample the finished fare.
When: 4-5 p.m.
Where: 15 Prospect Street, Southampton.
Cost: $15 in advance, $20 at the door, $12 per ticket for groups of six or more purchased in advance.

- What: Huntington Family Earth Day Expo. Learn about solar energy, organic gardening, composting, bio-diesel and alternative fuel and more. The kids will enjoy fun family educational activities.
