Grace and John Lutz longed for a family, but they weren't able to have biological children. So the couple adopted 18 kids. This included seven children with Down Syndrome. When the couple passed away, their daughter Kathleen decided to move back home to take care of her six siblings with Down Syndrome who were still in the house. But when Kathleen was diagnosed with inoperable cancer, her brother, John, Jr., offered to move in to help the family.
They all lived in a 40-year-old house at 12 Ringneck Road in East Setauket, NY. Unfortunately, the Lutz home was in dire need of repairs. Extreme Makeover:Home Edition saved the day. When the Lutz family was attending a baseball game at Yankee Stadium on June 20, 2010, the Emmy Award-winning show surprised them by announcing that they were getting a makeover.
