Each year on the third Monday in January, we celebrate the remarkable life of Martin Luther King, Jr. Read more about places to go and things to do on Long Island, NY to commemorate this great man's contributions to all of humankind. Please note that some of the events are on the actual holiday, and others are scheduled shortly after that date.

Sunday, January 15 - Elmont Library

At 2 p.m., the Elmont Memorial Library, 700 Hempstead Turnpike, Elmont, NY, (516) 354-5280 - extension 1002, will host Say That I Tried to Love Somebody... from the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Join Terry Lewis in discussing the messages conveyed in the works of this prominent civil rights leader. What do the messages mean today? How might the ideas be applied in our daily lives? Share personal reflections and insights. Location: Meeting Room 2.

Monday, January 16 - Long Island Children's Museum

Also at the Long Island Children's Museum: Aspiring Young Artists presents MLK in Music and Words” at 1 and 3 p.m.

Honor the memory and accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a performance by local performing group Aspiring Young Artists. They have created an original production in remembrance of Reverend King using music and his words as inspiration.

Ages: 5 and up. Fee: $4 with museum admission ($3 LICM members) $8 theater only.

Monday, January 16 - Congregational Church of Huntington

National Day of Service Event in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. = Monday January 16 @ 7 p.m. The Congregational Church of Huntington, 30 Washington Drive, Centerport, NY (1/4 mile north of 25A on Washington Drive), (631)432-4004.

The church is hoping to make food for their hungry neighbors and to collect non-perishable items for local food pantries. Supplies for sandwiches, lunch meat (ham, turkey, baloney) sliced cheese and sliced bread are needed.

Fruit is especially needed: bananas, apples, oranges, clementines.

Donations of non-perishable items (soup, peanut butter, pasta, rice,tomato sauce, canned vegetables, beans, tuna fish, etc.) will be given to the Huntington Food Council.

Bring your friends and family and meet people who care about our community. All are welcome, children and adults.

Registration is not necessary but helpful for their set-up. Please RSVP to acanadeo@aol.com if possible.

Monday, January 16 - Saturday, January 21 - Donate Sports Equipment

In Honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. National Day of Service, the Long Island Volunteer Center is sponsoring a drive for gently used sports equipment, in partnership with Modell's Sporting Goods and children's Sport Connection, to benefit at-risk children.

Please donate new or gently used basketballs, soccer balls, footballs, tennis balls, tennis racquets, Lacrosse balls and sticks.

Donations will be accepted during regular store hours at the following Modell’s Sporting Goods locations:

  • Commack – 5025 Jericho Turnpike
  • Farmingdale – 206 Airport Plaza
  • Garden City – Roosevelt Field Shopping Center
  • Lake Success – 1510 Union Turnpike

Monday, January 17 - Long Island Children's Museum

Dreaming with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. - One-hour program for children 5 and up starts at 1 p.m.

Bring your children to explore the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Children 5 and up will draw inspiration from the life, speeches and visions of one of the nation’s most historic leaders. Children will each create a painting of peace to celebrate the day. Fee: $3 with museum admission ($2 LICM members.)

Friday, January 20 - Freeport Library

At the Freeport Memorial Library, 144 West Merrick Road, Freeport, NY: Friday, January 20 at 3 p.m. see the film, Been to the Mountaintop: Martin Luther King, Jr. This film features original footage of highlights of dramatic speeches given by the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. from 1956 to 1968, including his last address on April 3, 1968.
