Thursday, January 16, 2014 - Lakeview Public Library

Monday, January 20, 2014 - National Day of Service

In 1994, Congress first designated Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, already a federal holiday, as a National Day of Service. People of all ages can honor Dr. King's legacy by volunteering in their community or by planning their own project. Please see the next listing for one of the Long Island-based events.

Monday, January 20, 2014 - Long Island Children's Museum

Dreaming with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the Long Island Children's Museum. Bring your children ages 5 and up to this program, held at 11 a.m. (ends at 11:45 a.m.)  They'll explore the remarkable life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and draw inspiration from his legacy as they produce an artwork of peace. Fee: $3 with museum admission ($2 for Long Island Children's Museum members.)

Monday, January 20, 2014 - Long Beach MLK Center, Inc.

The Long Beach Martin Luther King Center Birthday Commemorative March starts promptly at 11:30 a.m. at the corner of Laurelton Boulevard and Park Avenue, Long Beach, NY.  Participants will gather at 11 a.m. for this Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Celebration, Luncheon and Annual Fundraiser. Monday, January 20, 2014 - Half Hollow Hills Community Library-Dix Hills

 Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Half Hollow Hills Community Library - Dix Hills branch, 55 Vanderbilt Parkway, Dix Hills, NY. From 2 to 4 p.m. Program for adults in meeting room B. The Wheatley Heights MOther's Club will preent poetry, music and songs to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The club is requesting donations of new sock to be given to the Gerald Ryan Outreach Center of Our Lady of Miraculous Medal Catholic Church in Wyandanch. Tickets are not required for this event.

Monday, January 20, 2014 - 21st Annual MLK Jr. Day Parade - Hempstead

 Starting at 9 a.m., this annual parade will take a new route this year. Beginning at Hempstead Town Hall parking lot on Front Street and Greenwich Street, it will continue on to Kennedy Memorial Park, 335 Greenwich Street. A brief ceremony will follow in the auditorium at 9:30 a.m.

Monday, January 20, 2014 - Memorial Breakfast - Hauppauge

From 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. (doors open at 7:30 a.m.), Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Breakfast at the Hyatt Regency Long Island, 1717 Motor Parkway, Hauppauge, NY, (631) 784-1234. $50 per person. The First Baptist Church of RIverhead hosts this memorial breakfast in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Keynote speaker: Rashad Robinson.
