In 1994, Congress first designated Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, already a federal holiday, as a National Day of Service. People of all ages can honor Dr. King's legacy by volunteering in their community or by planning their own project. A National Day of Service Event honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at 7 p.m. at the Congregational Church of Huntington, 30 Washington Drive, Centerport, NY, (631) 432-4004 (1/4 mile north of 25A on Washington Drive.) All children and adults are welcome. The church hopes to make lots of food for their hungry neighbors and to collect non-perishable items for local food pantries.Donations needed: supplies for sandwiches, lunch meat (ham, turkey, baloney), sliced cheese and sliced bread. Fruit is especially needed: bananas, apples, oranges, clementines. Healthy snacks like granola bars, small boxes of raisins, whole grain snacks.
Non-perishable items will be collected for the Huntington Food Council, such as soup, peanut butter, pasta, rice, tomato sauce, canned vegetables, beans, tuna, etc.
Registration is not necessary, but is helpful for the church's set-up. Please RSVP to acanadeo@aol.com if possible.

Dreaming with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the Long Island Children's Museum. Bring your children ages 5 and up to this program, held at 1:30 and 3 p.m.They'll explore the remarkable life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and draw inspiration from his legacy as they produce an artwork of peace. Fee: $3 with museum admission ($2 for Long Island Children's Museum members.)
