Prepare for a chilling, thrilling Halloween on Long Island. Even though Halloween only falls on one day, you can celebrate at other times this month with lots of fun festivals and other Halloween-inspired events. Now Through October 31

At Hicks Nurseries, kids will once again enjoy a FREE walk-through, animated story about Otto the Ghost. There will also be live animals on view.

There will be hayrides (for a fee) every day from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m., and gardening seminars as well.

Various Dates Throughout October

Gateway's Haunted Playhouse of Horrors run by the Gateway Playhouse, 215 South Country Road, Bellport. Walk through a haunted house for scary encounters with ghosts and ghouls. Note: this is NOT recommended for children.

LI’s scary haunted warehouse with over 4,500 sq ft of “live” ghouls, ghosts and goblins. Get scared and give back: all proceeds to benefit YES Community Counseling and The Heather Pedergast Fund.

WHEN: Fridays and Saturdays, October 7- 8, 14-15, 21-22, 28-29 7pm to 11pm, Sundays and Thursday, October 23, 27, 30 7pm to 10pm, Monday, October 31, 7pm to 11pm

WHERE: 10 Brooklyn Avenue, Massapequa, NY, 1 block north of Sunrise Highway off Route 107

COST: $8 October 7-8/$10 October 14-31. Cash only. Additional donations gratefully accepted.

Saturday, October 1 and Sunday, October 2

PumpkinFest 2011 at the Suffolk County Farm and Education Center in Yaphank. Attractions include a corn maze, hay rides, pumpkin picking and painting, farm animals, pony rides (for an additional fee) and much, much more. From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. $10 admission for adults, children under 3 enter for free. Call (631)852-5300 for more information.

Weekends, October 8 to October 30 (closed October 31)

The Smithtown Township Arts Council presents the Halloween Candelabra Theatre's Friday performances (Oct. 14-28) of Qualia: Origins of the Undead, a play set in Victorian England and investigating the origin of zombies. $17 per person. At the Mill Pond House, St. James, NY. At 7:45 and 9 p.m.

On Saturdays, Oct. 8-29, the Living Dead Mafia Show at 6:45 and 9:15 p.m. $17 per ticket.

Sundays, Oct. 9-30, 6:45 p.m. Even Later with Salvatore Rizzo. $17 per ticket.

Friday, October 8 and Saturday, October 9 and other weekends

Every year around Halloween, the Bayville Firehouse, 258 Bayville Avenue, Bayville has transformed into a haunted house as a fundraiser for the Bayville Fire Company No. 1. Friday night, from 7 to 11 p.m. and Saturday, from 6 to 11 p.m., enter the house of terror by donating $13 per person admission. For more information, please call (516) 628-3230.

The Haunted Firehouse is also open on October 15, 16, 22, 23, 29, 30 and 31.

In the fall, Bayville Adventure Park turns into Bayville Scream Park with chills and thrills for the whole family. Terrifying attractions include the Funhouse of Fear and Curse of the Zombie Pirates. If you're hungry, stop by their Creepy Cafe. For more info and prices, go to Bayville Scream Park.

Take the family to the Quogue Wildlife Refuge's 18th Annual Spooky Walk and Enchanted Trail. 6:30 - 9 p.m. As you take a 40-minute guided walk down the refuge trails, don't be surprised if you meet spooky ghosts and goblins. $10 per person. This event is for adults and families with children over the age of 7. This event books up fast, so you must call (631) 653-4771 in advance to reserve a time slot. The Quogue Wildlife Refuge is located at 3 Old Country Road, Quogue.
