Warming Centers & Shelter Emergencies in Suffolk County, Long Island, NY

Everyone knows that despite weather predictions for the average temperatures on Long Island, New York, there are always cases of extreme cold during unexpected winter storms. If you find yourself in an emergency during dangerously cold weather, there are resources for you in Suffolk County, NY.

Who to contact if you are having a home heating emergency and are in need of fuel and/or repair to your heater

If the weather outside is dangerously cold and you suddenly find yourself without enough heating fuel in your home, or if you need emergency burner repair, you can call the Suffolk County Department of Social Services or go to one of their centers:

If you're calling Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m .and 4 p.m., please contact the Suffolk County Department of Social Services Home Energy Assistance Program at (631) 853-8820. Or if you are calling on a weekend, a holiday or after 4:30 p.m., then please phone the Suffolk County Department of Social Services Emergency Services Unit at (631) 854-9100.

What to do if you need an emergency shelter during the cold weather

For those who are homeless and in dire need of a shelter from the dangerously low temperatures, please make a call to the Suffolk County Department of Social Services, from Monday through Friday during the hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The number for their       temporary housing assistance unit is (631) 854-9517. If you're calling on a weekend, holiday or after 4:30 p.m., then please phone the SC DSS Emergency Services Unit at (631) 854-9100.

Note that there is in person shelter assistance from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the following Suffolk County Department of Social Services service centers at:
