It's that time of year again. Along with budding flowers and the beginning of lush greenery here on Long Island, spring also brings the deadline for us to file our taxes.

If you need help with your tax preparation, but are on a tight budget, you might qualify for free assistance in filling out your tax returns.

Free tax preparation for U.S. military personnel and their families

Are you or a member of your family serving in the U.S. military? If so, the Armed Forces Tax Council (AFTC) can offer tax program coordinators for those in the U.S. army, air force, navy, marine corps and coast guard. Those in the military can received free tax preparation assistance at offices within their installations from the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. Free tax preparation for those age 60 or older

The TCE (Tax Counseling for the Elderly) Program offers free tax help for those ages 60 nand older. Volunteers who are trained will provide free tax counseling and basic income tax preparation. For more information on the TCE program, please call (800) 829-1040.

AARP, as part of the TCE Program sponsored by the IRS, offers AARP Tax-Aide, a free tax counseling program at over 7000 sites around the U.S. They help people with low to middle income, and especially those 60 and over. To find the location nearest you, please go to AARP Tax-Aide and use their tax locator, or call (888) 227-7669.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program - for those with low to moderate incomes

If you have a low or moderate income, you may qualify for free help preparing your tax returns. To find a VITA site here on Long Island, NY, please call (800) 906-9887 or visit otda.ny.gov/programs/tax-credits/vita. (Note: the site does not list every venue where volunteers serve.)

Free File software
