Port Jefferson Visitors Guide

Visit Port Jefferson: Long Island's Seaport

From Lori Madrid, for About.com

Port Jefferson, sometimes referred to as Long Island's Seaport, is a historic ship-building village. Port Jefferson is a visitor's dream, and one of the most picturesque of waterside villages to be found on Long Island. From its waterside location at the head of a beautiful deep water harbor to its enviable position as a busy downtown area in the heart of Long Island's prestigious north shore, Port Jefferson village consists of so many wonderful shops, restaurants and things to do, it is worth spending a weekend.

Take a tour of the historic homes, watch the ferry and many boats in the harbor, go see a play at our wonderful theater, spend the day shopping, visit our museum and select from many fabulous restaurants.

Start with breakfast at Toast and walk along historic East Main Street. Stop off at the Pink Grasshopper for wonderful resort clothing and gorgeous dresses; visit Lavender Fields for a full selection of home décor, bedding, candles, pajamas, and bath and body products. Be sure to bring your dog and visit Fetch, the unique pet boutique and bakery, for a full selection of treats, clothing, healthy foods and toys. Find wonderful antiques in Pattern Finders. Unwind with a massage at Body Wise and have a healthy lunch at Tiger Lily, a vegetarian restaurant. After lunch, experience the sheer majesty of the Long Island Sound with a sightseeing cruise on the Martha Jefferson an 85 foot Mississippi River Paddleboat .

Staying for dinner? Complete your day with a delicious dinner at Ruvo, an Italian restaurant. If you are looking for dinner with a spectacular view head to Lombardi's on the Sound at the Port Jefferson Country Club. Save room for the delicious desserts such as chocolate fondue at Toast or ice cream in one of the many ice cream shops then walk it off by shopping and visiting an art gallery or going to see a play at Theater Three.

The holiday season is extra special in Port Jefferson. Come visit the first weekend in December and the town is transformed into a Dickensian village. The Charles Dickens Festival is so amazing people come from all over to spend the weekend or a day. There are festivities scheduled almost every fifteen minutes. Shop the old market, listen to a choir sing on a church corner, eat a traditional dinner with live entertainment, and finish your day with an opera or show.

Spend the night or weekend in one of the many bed and breakfasts such as the Holly Berry Bed and Breakfast or Golden Pineapple Bed and Breakfast. For spectacular views of the harbor spend the night at Danfords on the Sound, a full-service hotel.

You may just want to move to Port Jefferson after spending a weekend. It is difficult to find a house in the village since taxes are low, the Port Jefferson School District is excellent and we have wonderful amenities like a country club and private beach. Be sure to walk up the village streets and see the wonderful historic homes. Pick up a Historical Society of Greater Port Jefferson walking guide at the Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce for a self-guided tour. The Mather House Museum is open from early July until mid September and there is a wonderful vintage shop right next door complete with stunning perennial gardens.
