Your tour will start at the
Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium (1660 Route 25A). In 2008, the hatchery celebrated its 125th anniversary. There's plenty to see here, and kids will especially enjoy learning about the marine creatures that call the hatchery home.
- Walk around the outdoor ponds where trout dart through the water. Nets covering the ponds protect the fish from ospreys and herons.
- Then go indoors, where the Walter L. Ross II Aquarium Building features more than 30 species of freshwater fish that are native to the area and other parts of New York State. You'll see Long Island brook trout swimming through their tanks, and in Turtle Alcove, tiny hatchlings are raised.
- A walk through the grounds will bring you to more exhibits, including a warm water pond with various residents like channel catfish, grass carp, American eels, Northern pike, and other fish.
