Long Island boasts a rich maritime heritage, and Cold Spring Harbor was a thriving whaling village in the 1800s. Although the vast market for whale oil and other whale products rapidly began declining in the mid-nineteenth century, the Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum continues to keep alive the fascinating history of the village's past. The museum displays authentic ships' figureheads, exquisitely rendered scrimshaw, a historic whaleboat, interactive audio, video and computer exhibits and more. Special exhibitions and family programs are scheduled throughout the year. The museum also hosts children's birthday parties and museum sleepovers.
Come to the Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum to discover Long Island's whaling heritage. Although we now know that the industry nearly drove the whales to extinction, we can learn much about a time when the village's economy depended on this natural resource.
