Institutes of higher learning on Long Island, NY

Whether you've grown up on Long Island, NY and want to stay on the Island while attending college, or you're from another part of the country and want to get a degree in New York, you have many options. There are a number of excellent colleges and universities to choose from. Here's a list of Long Island's institutes of higher learning, along with their contact information.

1. Adelphi University

Adelphi has won a number of awards: for the second year in a row, the university has been placed on the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. It also appeared on the U.S. News' 2013 Best Graduate Schools list for their School of Social Work and more.

The university offers a number of schools and programs including the Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies, Honors College, the College of Arts and Sciences, Ruth S. School of Education, University College, Robert B. Willumstad School of Business, the School of Nursing, and the School of Social Work.

Adelphi's main campus is in Garden City, New York, but there are also centers in Manhattan, Hauppaugue and Poughkeepsie.

2. Briarcliffe College

Briarcliffe College offers three locations: two on Long Island and one in Queens, NY. In addition, the college offers some online degree programs. Program offerings include Accounting, Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Graphic Design, Healthcare and more.

3. Dowling College

Dowling College was founded in 1995, and was originally part of Adelphi College's outreach, and housed in the former W.K. Vanderbilt estate in 1962. (In 1968, Dowling was no longer affiliated with Adelphi.)

The college currently has three campuses: the original one on the former Vanderbilt property, a campus in Brookhaven, with free shuttle buses between campuses. There are also select courses taught at the Melville Center.

Dowling offers Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Business Administration undergraduate degrees. It also offers graduate degrees: Master of Arts, Master of Science, Master of Business Administration, and Doctor of Education. The college also features its School of Aviation with state-of-the-art flight emulators and planes with the latest instrumentation, and a NASA-funded airport management simulation laboratory.

4. Five Towns College

Five Towns College offers programs in music, film and video, theater arts, audio, education, business, music business and mass communication.

5. Hofstra University

Hofstra University features over 100 undergraduate and about 150 graduate programs, from Business, Communication, Education, Liberal Arts and Sciences, Health and Human Services to Engineering and Applied Science. Hofrstra also features a School of Medicine and a School of Law.

6. Long Island University

Long Island University features several campuses in Brookville, Brentwood, Riverhead and also outside of Long Island in Westchester and Brooklyn.

7. Molloy College

Located in Nassau County, Molloy College features a wide range of undergraduate majors and minors, graduate degree programs and a doctoral program in nursing.

8. Nassau Community College

Nassau Community College, part of the SUNY (State University of New York) system, offers hundred of day, evening, weekend and online (distance ed) courses in over 70 fields of study.

The community college offers AA, AS and AAS degrees and other special certificate programs.

9. New York College of Health Professionals

New York College of Health Professionals offers courses in holistic health care. It offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in acupuncture, massage therapy, Oriental medicine and herbal medicine, as well as continuing education certificate programs in holistic nursing for RNs, yoga, Tai Chi, Reiki and more.

10. New York Institute of Technology

The New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) hubs are located in Old Westbury and Manhattan in New York, and with global campuses in Canada, China, the MIddle East and online. There is an additional Long Island location in Central Islip.

NYIT offers 90 degree programs (undergraduate, graduate and professional) in over 50 fields of study which include architecture and design, arts and sciences, education, engineering and computing sciences, osteopathic medicine and more.
