The Bottom Line
This intimate trattoria serves surprisingly good food for a restaurant that's housed within a shopping mall, the Lake Success Shopping Center. The meals are delicious and service is excellent. The secret must be that the trattoria is owned and operated by Iavarone Brothers Foods, which has produced palate-pleasing foods for over 80 years. They own four stores, including one just next door to the trattoria.

Guide Review - The Back Room Trattoria at Iavarone Brothers
When my husband walked into the Fratelli Iavarone Café with me for lunch, he thought we could only buy pizza and other snacks. But we walked past the front of the café and landed in a lovely space, the The Back Room Trattoria at Iavarone Brothers, which seems miles away from its shopping mall surroundings.
As soft music played in the background, we sat at a cozy table and were immediately served freshly baked bread and caponata, a delicious Sicilian eggplant dip. We ordered appetizers including the excellent polenta with a delicate mushroom and gorgonzola cheese sauce as well as a fresh beet salad with a delightful blend of goat cheese, orange slices, mesclun and walnuts. These appetizers are so delicious and filling that I'm sure two of them would make a filling meal.
For an entree, I suggest the pan seared filet of sole, which was tender and flaky. It came with a white wine sauce with a unique touch: the addition of grapes for a hint of sweetness to the meal. My husband enjoyed the chicken francese, which he described as tender and flavorful.
There are also pasta dishes, seafood, meat and vegetarian dishes. Wine is also served. Make sure to save room for dessert. Choose from the milk chocolate mousse, luscious cannolis, tiramisu, tartufo and more.
