Long Island Thrift Shops

Where to Find Thrift Shops on Long Island

By

Thrift shops have been around for a very long time, but in a shaky economy, these economical stores have a broader appeal. Most thrift shops offer clothing and shoes, but others feature household items and furniture as well. Here’s a sampling of some of the thrift shops on Long Island.

Northern Thrift

UPDATE: This great thrift shop in Huntington closed in the winter of 2009. I'm sure those who shopped there were sad to see it go. I'm leaving this up just to make sure everyone knows that it's not open. For similar bargains, check out two sister stores which have survived to this day: Island Thrift and Selden Thrift, listed below.

Island Thrift

700 Suffolk Avenue, Brentwood

This mega-store is filled with bargain clothing and shoes for men, women and children, furniture and home decorations, as well as books, toys, jewelry, seasonal items and some furniture. There are half-price specials for items with a designated ticket color of the day.

National Council of Jewish Women Thrift Shop

342 Central Avenue, Lawrence NY, (516) 569-0510, thriftshopncjw@optonline.net

Clothing, housewares, appliances, books, more.

Selden Thrift

614 Middle Country Road, Selden, NY, (631) 736-3979.

Yet another supermarket-sized sister store to Island Thrift (and the now closed Northern Thrift.) Selden Thrift sells "all the usual suspects" in places like these: lots of clothing and shoes in a wide range of sizes and for all age ranges, furniture, household items and lots more.

Unique Thrift Store - Westbury

525 Old Country Road, Westbury, NY, (516) 338-1760 (See next listing for their Levittown store.)

This store is the size of a supermarket and features just about everything you can think of: men's, women's and children's clothes. Almost all of the clothes are in good condiition and very clean. The prices range from super-cheap to reasonable. I passed up a $5.99 leather jacket from Lord & Taylor because it was a little big on me, but it certainly was an incredible price.

They also sell wedding dresses, shoes and boots, household goods, electronics, artwork, sports equipment, and all manner of tchotches  for the kitchen and bathroom.
