The RXR/TIAA-CREF Long Island Marathon: Festival of Races:
It all started in the early 1970s with the "Earth Day Marathon," where Long Island runners raced for 26.2 miles within Eisenhower Park. Later renamed the "Long Island Marathon," the competition added the Half Marathon in 1984.
These earlier races eventually became the RXR/TIAA-CREF Long Island Marathon: Festival of Races, and today's competitions include a marathon, half marathon, 10K race, 5K race, 10-mile run and KidzFunRun.
The Long Island Marathon in 2011:
In its 39th year, the RXR/TIAA-CREF Long Island Marathon: Festival of Races takes place on Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1, 2011. These exciting races give Long Island area residents the opportunity to compete in different levels of athletic skills.
Saturday, April 30, 2011:
- a one-mile run
- a 5K run and
- the Kids Fun Run.
Sunday, May 1, 2011:
- The marathon
- The half marathon
- and the 10K race
