Sports fans don't have to travel to enjoy exciting baseball, soccer and other games. From the New York Islanders to the Long Island Ducks, Long Island sports teams abound on the Island.
The New York Islanders
Long Island's professional hockey team, the New York Islanders, have been competing since 1972 at the Nassau Coliseum. The team has produced four Stanley Cup champions.
The Long Island Ducks
The Long Island Ducks are the Island's professional baseball team and a member of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. The Ducks have played in the Suffolk County Sports Park (formerly Citibank Park and EAB Park) in Central Islip, NY. Their mascot, Quacker Jack, is a baseball-suited live person cavorting in a duck mask.The Long Island Rough Riders
The Long Island Rough Riders started playing soccer in 1994. There's a men's team, a women's team and Junior Rough Riders. For information on tryouts, please go to the Long Island Rough Riders website or e-mail info@liroughriders.com.
The Long Island Rough Riders Men's team and the Long Island Rough Riders Women's team both won their first USL (United Soccer League) national championships in 1995. In 2002, the Rough Riders Men's team won the 2nd Division National Championship, and in 2008, the Rough Riders Women's team made it to the Eastern Conference Finals.
