With its gently rolling hills and sprawling, flat landscapes, Long Island is a great place to play golf. There are many private and public courses throughout the Island. Here is a sampling of ten public golf courses on Long Island.

Bethpage State Park Golf Courses

Bethpage State Park features five world-class, 18-hole golf courses: Green, Red, Blue, Yellow, and Black. The best known is the Black Course, famed for its 2002 hosting of the U.S. Open where Tiger Woods finished the 72-hole competition at 3 under par. From June 15-21, 2009, the Black Course again hosted the U.S. Open.

The public course is open year round. Park facilities include a golf driving range, golf pro shop and restaurant.

This 18-hole golf course is open all year long. Golf memberships are available, but the course is also open to the public. Private lessons and group clinics are available. Facilities include a driving range, golf pro shop and miniature golf.

Christopher Morley Park

This 98-acre park features a wealth of activities, including an executive level, nine-hole golf course. You’ll pay a discounted fee if you show a Leisure Pass. (For information on obtaining a Leisure Pass, call (516) 572-0327 or (516) 572-0328.) The park also features swimming, a fitness trail, tennis, baseball fields and more.

Cantiague Park Golf Course

The executive level, nine-hole course in Cantiague Park opened in 1965. The course is open year round. The park also features a golf driving range.

Eisenhower Park Golf Courses

Merrick and Stewart Avenues
East Meadow

This 18-hole, public course opened in 1914. It is located within Eisenhower Park, which sprawls for 930 acres, and is larger than Manhattan’s Central Park. The three 18-hole facilities are named the Red, White and Blue courses. You’ll need a Leisure Pass to play here. Eisenhower Park also features a lighted driving range.

Governor Alfred E. Smith/Sunken Meadow State Park Golf Course

Route 25A and Sunken Meadow Parkway
Kings Park

This 27-hole facility features three courses that can be played as nine or 18 hole rounds. The beachfront park also offers picnic areas and swimming. In 1962, two Alfred Tull-designed courses were opened here, and two years later, his Blue Course opened.

A pro shop, driving range, clinics and lessons are available.

Jones Beach State Park Pitch and Putt Course

This short course plays differently every day because it’s situated right by the boardwalk, where ocean breezes make for variable playing conditions. The 18-hole, oceanside course is a good choice for beginners. Children 10 and up, accompanied by a guardian, may join adults here.

Montauk Downs State Park Golf Course

50 South Fairview Avenue
Montauk

One of the top 50 public golf courses in the United States, Montauk Downs first opened in 1927. The 18-hole course was later redesigned by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. in 1968. It has been part of the NYS Park System since 1980.

Golf instruction and a Junior Program are available.

Robert Moses State Park Pitch and Putt Course

Play 18 holes on this short course that winds through trees and other beachside vegetation. Located at the western end of Robert Moses State Park near Field 2, the course features expansive views of the ocean. Opened in 1932, the course was designed by Joe Burbeck, who later designed the Bethpage Black Course. Although originally designed as a nine-hole course, it was later expanded to an 18-hole facility.

Sag Harbor State Golf Course

This Suffolk County golf course lies on a peninsula, surrounded by dramatic bluffs, woodlands and wetlands. The 9-hole course can be played as either nine or 18 holes. Resources Management Area. Weather permitting, the course is open year round.

A club house and snack bar are on the grounds, and lessons are available.
