Generally, in September, the temperature on Long Island becomes much milder. It drops to an average of 62.7 degrees. However, we sometimes experience "Indian summer" during this month, bringing us warmer weather. The average precipitation is 3.68 inches.
- Attend the Annual Shinnecock Pow Wow: Experience Native American culture at this three day festival that takes place every Labor Day Weekend in Southampton. The Pow Wow begins on Friday and runs through Monday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.
- Pick Your Own Apples: What a fun way to spend a mild weekend afternoon. There are a few apple orchards on Long Island that allow visitors to pick their own apples. All are located in Suffolk County. There are others located in upstate New York. Find out more about these u-pick apple orchards.
- Last Chance to See the Hampton Classic: The Hampton Classic, a horse show, takes place annually in Bridgehampton. This year this week-long event ends on Sunday, September 3rd.
- Donate School Supplies: School supplies can be quite costly. While some find this expense inconvenient, there are others for whom it is impossible. Many school parent-teacher associations as well as some houses of worship and local community organizations are collecting school supplies to be distributed to children who can't afford them. One organization that collects donated school supplies is Long Island Cares.
- Take a Hike: With cooler weather, September is a nice time for hiking. The Long Island Greenbelt Trail Conference maintains approximately 200 miles of hiking paths on Long Island. This organization is dedicated to protecting Long Island's open space. They lead 200 free guided hikes each year.
- How About a Bike Ride?: So, you're not into hiking. How about taking a bike ride. Bicycling on Long Island is a very popular activity. Find out about local bicycling clubs, get route maps, and find out where to go shopping for equipment.
- Attend the Maritime Festival in Greenport: The East End Seaport Maritime Museum is host to this annual event which will take place this year on September 22nd and 23rd. - Get a Library Card: September is Library Card Sign-up Month, sponsored by the American Library Association. Find your Nassau County library or Suffolk County Library.
