How Do I Report Losing An Item On The LIRR?

- Find out where to go to get back your lost items on the LIRR.

The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) reports that over 15,000 items are brought to the Lost and Found every year, so you're not alone if you fell asleep on the 6:28 a.m. train from Babylon, woke up suddenly when the train arrived in the city and sped out without taking your briefcase.

If you left something on a Long Island Rail Road train or an LIRR platform, you have several options for reporting your loss:

  • You can go online and fill out the LIRR Lost & Found Lost Property Customer Inquiry Form. You'll provide information about the time of the train that you were on, and what items you lost.

  • Or if you prefer, you can go in person to the Penn Station Lost & Found Office to see if someone turned in your lost items, and if not, to fill out a Lost & Found Property Inquiry Form. The Lost & Found Office is located at Penn Station's LIRR Concourse level, main gate area. It is across from tracks 13 and 14, and to the right of the 7th Avenue escalators. The office is open on weekdays from 7:20 a.m. to 7:20 p.m. It is closed on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

  • You may also choose to call (718) 217-5477 to speak to an LIRR representative who will let know you what to do to try to get back your lost items.

In all cases, the LIRR Lost & Found Office will contact you via e-mail if someone turns in a found object that matches the description of your lost item.
