If you or your loved ones are gluten intolerant, but still crave the sweet treats of Valentine's Day, there's a great-tasting solution. Wild Flours Bakery and Cafe in Huntington, NY is a completely gluten-free venue, and many of their baked goods, sandwiches, quiches, soups and more are made with organic ingredients.
Every year, about one week before Valentine's Day and up to the day of the holiday, Wild Flours offers gluten-free, dairy-free, heart-shaped, dark chocolate truffles. I have personally gone to the "trouble" of tasting these and I can tell you that they're for serious chocoholics who want to give their loved one a special treat on this romantic holiday.
Made from select ingredients, these sweets are almost entirely organic. The truffles are crafted from organic, fair trade chocolate from Peru, extra virgin coconut oil and teff flour -- a gluten-free, high fiber and high protein grain. To sweeten the deal, organic, unrefined cane juice is added, and there's a touch of organic strawberries in the mix.
The icing is made from organic powdered sugar, and there are no artificial dyes in that pink-tinged topping. The reddish hue comes from beet juice. The truffles have romantic or light-hearted words like "Love," "Hug Me," "Love Bites," "X O X" and the like piped across the top to deliver your tender feelings to your loved one.
Each heart-shaped truffle measures over 2 inches tall and when you bite into it, you'll find it's firm and chewy on the outside, yet soft, rich and decadently sweet on the inside. The gluten-free truffles are sold for $5.50 each.
If you just want to show your love in bite-sized pieces, there's a smaller version of the dessert. The mini heart truffles are about two-thirds the size of the larger ones, but deliver the same delicious flavors and sentiments. These Valentine's Day truffles sell for $3.50 apiece.
In addition, Wild Flours offers heart-shaped cakes around Valentine's Day. These tokens of affection come in two sizes: one version is 6 inches in diameter and 2 inches deep, while the larger version is 8 inches in diameter and also 2 inches deep. Emblazoned across the top are romantic sayings or simply "Happy Valentine's Day." Take note: if you want a cake for your loved one, please reserve as soon as possible. In February, these popular items sell quickly and you don't want to be left without a sweet treat for your loved one.
And for the apple of your eye, there are mini apple pies with hearts cut out of the top crust.
